Are homeopathic remedies placebos?

This myth can be re-phrased to read "You need to believe in it for it to work". This is nonsense to anyone who has experienced or prescribed a successful homeopathic cure for a head injury, a middle-ear infection in a child or teething pain in a baby.

A placebo is an un-medicated pill, which the patient believes contains something that will cure him or her. Homeopathic medicines work on babies and animals, neither of which is susceptible to the placebo effect. Research has ruled out the placebo effect and shown over and over again the efficacy of homeopathy. Science has also proven that water has a memory. See Health news.

Why use homeopathy?

Homeopathy is the second most widely used system of medicine in the world. Its growth in popularity in the United States has been around 25 - 50% a year throughout the last decade.

  • Homeopathy is extremely effective in acute, chronic, traumatic, epidemic, and endemic diseases - medical studies prove this. When the correct remedy is taken, results can be rapid, complete and permanent.
  • Homeopathy is completely safe. Even babies and pregnant women can use Homeopathy without the danger of side effects. Homeopathic remedies can also be taken alongside other medication without producing unwanted side effects.
  • Homeopathy is natural. Homeopathic remedies are usually based on natural ingredients.
  • Homeopathy works in harmony with your immune system and strengthens it, unlike some conventional medicines that suppress the immune system. (For example, cough medicines suppress the cough reflex, which is your body's attempt to clear the lungs)
  • Homeopathic remedies are not addictive - once relief is felt, you should stop taking them. If no relief is felt, you are probably taking the wrong homeopathic remedy.
  • Homeopathy is holistic. It fits in with traditional medicine practitioners' natural beliefs - no anthropological distance in beliefs - it recognises the patient as ill and takes the mental, emotional and physical side into account, rather than focusing solely on symptoms. This often means that symptoms tackled with homeopathy do not recur.
  • It enhances mother and child health, especially in a high mortality area. It is safe in pregnancy and safe for all infants and babies.
  • It can be implemented in situations with very little infrastructure and can be manufactured locally with low-tech equipment - storage needs are very basic, no electricity is required - essential in rural communities.
  • Even the poorest people in the world can afford homeopathy.
  • Homeopathy may benefit from but does not rely upon expensive diagnostic equipment.
  • In places where a doctor is two days walk, a simple self-help kit is a lifeline and a realistic, affordable, storable, option.
  • Free from developing drug resistance bacteria and viruses.

What's the difference between homeopathy and herbalism?

In herbalism plants are used for healing , usually either in the form of teas, alcoholic tinctures or macerated oils. A herb is used in its crude form. For example, you put chamomile into hot water and infuse it, and then you may inhale the steam or drink the chamomile tea. Your body absorbs the actual chamomile through the steam or tea. You could also let it sit in alcohol and then take a few drops of the chamomile tincture.

Making a remedy

Homeopathic remedies are made from plants but also from minerals, animal parts or venoms, metals, poisons, disease tissues, milks, waters, drugs and they can be made from other substances as well, like sun or moon light, radiation, and do on.

The difference is that, to make a homeopathic remedy, these substances are not used in their crude form, as in herbalism. They are diluted and succussed (shaken a number of times). This process is called potentisation (see Process of Potentisation). Homeopathic remedies from the 12c potency onwards don't contain any physical substance of the original material used, just the energy. This is where homeopathy really kicks in.

The higher the potency, the stronger the energetic force of the remedy, a 200c is much stronger than a 6c, a 30c is in the middle, LM is very high and becomes gentle again in use. Deadly poisons like Arsenic or snake venoms like the one from the bushmaster become safe, and important homeopathic remedies called ARSENICUM ALBUM and LACHESIS. Any homeopathic remedy can be bought without prescription as they are non-toxic.

A homeopathic remedy is an energetic force and resonates with the body's own healing energy. It will only promote what is necessary. So a herbal laxative in its crude dose will give you a bowel movement whether you need it or not, if you take a homeopathic remedy you only get a movement if you need it.

Do homeopathic remedies have toxic side-effects?

Dangerous side-effects are unknown. Homeopathic remedies contain predominantly energy. Very little, if any, of the original physical substance remains due to the process of potentisation. So you cannot over-dose with a homeopathic remedy. In fact, homeopathic remedies are the most gentle medicine known.

Even if a small child takes a whole box of remedies it won't get seriously ill. However, over a period of time the child's mood could be altered slightly or it could be sensitive or a little weaker. The amount of remedies could influence the child's constitution temporarily, but the child's own vital force will correct this influence quickly.

If a patient receives the wrong remedy for a long time, he could start 'proving' it. He could develop the symptoms the remedy was meant to cure. If he stops the remedy, those symptoms would subside again.

However, if after taking a remedy old symptoms return, or the symptoms the remedy was meant to cure get a little worse initially, this is a good sign and shows the remedy is working well.

Complex remedies, which are popular in Europe, contain a great number of remedies. They are prescribed in the hope that one or a few of the remedies will work for the ailment. And if the other ones don't do anything for it, they won't do any harm either. If they could do any harm, there would not be so many complex homeopathic medicines on the market.

How do I choose the right remedy?

In homeopathy the treatment is individualised. It is your particular symptoms we are interested in, and that helps differentiate between remedies. For example if you have a cold, it is not the fact that you have a runny nose, which is common to most colds. That is important but the nature of the discharge in your particular case (e.g. is it clear, greenish, yellow, bloody, runny or thick, profuse or blocked and so on.) Homeopathy also takes into account your mental and emotional symptoms. So, if you have diarrhoea and you are restless and anxious in an uncharacteristic way, then this would form part of what is known as the 'symptom picture', which would then be matched to the homeopathic remedy, or the 'drug picture'.

Which potency do I give?

For the sake of simplicity, and to avoid confusion, the potencies recommended are the 6c, 30c, and 200c. A much wider range of potencies is available but the three selected cover the main indications. The basic potencies to have are 6c and 30c. Most ailments can be healed with these two potencies.

Match potency with energy of the disease or the person - or take the one you have, it is not that important. A good medium potency for acute situations is 30c - a lot of pain, colic, violent cold, fever, and so on. Or you can go up to 200c for intense, acute states.

The 6c is more gentle and slow acting, and you may have to take it more often two three times per day. For example, for a chronic catarrh, take 6c every day three times, and eventually it will go.

Otherwise the lower potencies could just be a nice, gentle support. The 200c will be given as a single dose, or perhaps, repeated once. The 30c will be limited to a few doses, about three to nine, spaced out four to six hours apart in acute illness, or given twice or three times a week in less acute conditions. The 6c may on occasion be continued, twice or thrice daily, for a longer period.

Always the guiding rule is to stop administering the remedy when relief is obtained. The prolonged use of a remedy will defeat its own purpose by over-stimulation. The occasional person is over-sensitive to medicines. They know this, and if so use low potencies, 3 to 9. In people with skin complaints, very old people, people with known serious conditions, and people on lots of medical drugs, stay low too.

If you have pills, the remedy often works better if dissolved as one pill in water and stirred, and even better if put in a bottle and banged 10 times or so before each use. And if you are running short of one remedy you can duplicate it forever this way.

How do I store homeopathic remedies?

Homeopathic medicines require special handling and storage so that they may not lose their power and become inert as a result of contamination.

They should always be kept in the container in which they are supplied and never transferred to any other box or bottle that has contained other substances.

They should be kept away from strong light, from great heat and especially from exposure to strong odours or perfumes, such as camphor, menthol, or mothballs. They should also be kept away from radiation like that occurring in the vicinity of computers, mobile phones, TVs, microwaves, CD players, fuse boxes and magnetic fields.

When travelling wrap the remedies in tin foil! This will protect them from the x-ray machines or just ask for your homeopathic kit not to be x-rayed when you go through customs with your hand luggage. This is perfectly acceptable in most countries.

How do I take homeopathic remedies?

Shake the remedy from the bottle into the lid. Place it under the tongue. Make sure your mouth is clean. Do NOT swallow it. Leave it in your mouth for two minutes then swallow. Don't eat, drink, smoke or brush your teeth for five minutes before or after taking the remedies. Avoid coffee, camphor, peppermint, eucalyptus, menthol and other strong smelling substances as these can interfere with your remedies.

Only one remedy should be given at a time, and only a limited number of doses, enough to bring about relief. The doses must be adequately spaced, the frequency of successive doses being in direct relation to the urgency of the situation.

Touch the remedies as little as possible. You can touch your remedy (and your child's if necessary), not anyone else's, which could render it ineffective.

If the remedy has come into contact with another substance or has spilt on the floor it may not work any more.

DON'T drink coffee, use peppermint, camphor, eucalyptus, menthol, at the same time as taking homeopathy. Ideally avoid these things for months after.

Tell children NOT to eat, suck, swallow or do anything to it. It may not work but it is worth a try, as is deliberate distraction immediately on giving it.

For babies and animals, crush the pill between two spoons and put the powder in the mouth, or dilute the pill in a dropper bottle and squirt the liquid into the mouth.

Homeopathic remedies in liquid form

A very effective way of taking the remedies is in water. Get a 30 ml dropper bottle (Neal's Yard) and place about 3 pellets inside, fill it up with bottled spring water, add some brandy to preserve and take about 5 drops three times a day in half a glass of water. But trick is to bang it first five times. Potentise it this way every time you take the remedy. It is also useful to get more mileage out of the tablets.

Put seven drops in ½ glass of water and swallow, make sure your mouth is clean and don't eat or drink five minutes before or after. Take seven drops in the morning and seven drops in the evening unless indicated differently. Reduce the dose if necessary if you feel discomfort, or if your symptoms return after going away, in emergency situations you can take an extra dose.

How do I know the remedy has worked?

In an acute situation the patient may say within minutes or even in seconds as the remedy touches their lips: "I feel better". This is a sure sign, wait and see. In a chronic condition it takes longer.

Going into a good sleep is a good sign.

Feeling their old self again is a sure sign.

A short worsening followed by a definite improvement is a good sign in serious illness.

A return of old symptoms is a good sign, they should be milder in appearance and clear up swiftly.

In a serious acute illness this return of old symptoms won't happen.

Return of appetite is a good sign. But sick people should drink but NOT eat, and don't encourage it until recovery is established, it will otherwise delay cure. Allow fruit if hungry.

Symptoms shifting from vital internal sites to more external ones are good too, and from fears and shock to weeping and anger likewise.

TLC or tender loving care is ALWAYS helpful.

Can I self prescribe?

It is safe to self prescribe for non-threatening, acute conditions, but if the problem is more serious - a frequently recurrent ailment or a deeper emotional or mental imbalance - it is advisable to consult with your homeopath at energy-for-health either in person or online. We have a very wide selection of remedies and potencies, and various techniques and strategies of prescribing, drawing also on other forms of energy medicine such as flower essences, Qi Gong or herbs, for example.

When you do self prescribe, the guiding rule is always to stop the administration of the remedy when relief is obtained. Only repeat the remedy as the symptoms return. With less severe symptoms repeat 4-hourly as a guide.

The prolonged use of a remedy will defeat its own purpose by over-stimulation.

Only one remedy should be given at a time, and only a limited number of doses, enough to bring about relief. The doses must be adequately spaced, the shortness of the interval between successive doses being in direct relation to the urgency of the situation. With violent, acute symptoms you can repeat very frequently, even after 5 minutes. If a remedy works dramatically don't repeat. Wait for the symptoms return.

In the beginning repeat frequently until it starts to work.

After an acute attack a few excess doses DON'T matter. And to stop too soon may allow a relapse. If a new set of symptoms occur, and these are not the same as the last remedy picture, then you need to change remedy.

If you give a few doses of the same remedy and it has no affect then it is the wrong remedy. Check the symptoms again and choose another one.

In homeopathy we match the symptom picture of the patient with the remedy picture, the closer the match the more profound the healing results. If the remedy is not quite right it may only heal partially.

The least you need is a three-legged stool: three clear symptoms of the patient need to match three symptoms from the remedy picture! Homeopathic remedies can be taken alongside pharmaceutical drugs, sometimes they can help deal with the side effects, or as the patient heals the medicines can slowly be reduced.

Every patient is treated individually according to his or her mental and emotional states and physical symptoms. Strengthen your healing energies with energy medicine.

What to watch out for when self-prescribing?

Suppression is not common with homeopathic treatment but it is possible. If your complaint disappears, but you feel in yourself worse inside (your moods and your energy), then it is likely that you have made a poor choice of remedy. You can antidote the remedy with strong coffee or strong smells like camphor or peppermint.

Proving - when you take the wrong remedy for a very long time, you can experience some of the symptoms it is meant to heal.

Confused picture - if you are taking different remedies one after the other. To be sure, see us face-to-face or consult online.
